Microsoft has confirmed that a recent update for Windows is causing some PCs to freeze or hang after applying the patch. However, the problem might be more widespread than Microsoft is admitting at the moment. The security update in question includes improvements and fixes that were part of update KB released last month, Microsoft says.

It was primarily meant to provide further mitigations against Spectre and Meltdown, but included other fixes as well. Since rolling out, some users of certain third-party antivirus software have been complaining of lockups.

After initial examination I discovered that SAV service was logging lots of error messages in event log.

Event IDs : service hang80, 81, 83, 85, 82, I rebooted the server in to safe mode and disabled the Sophos services. After this, I was able to reboot normally. Then I uninstalled Sophos, rebooted and tried to install again but this time the installation didn't complete and the server hang again.

I rebooted again in safe mode, disabled services, rebooted and uninstalled sophos again. After checking the Windows logs I realised that the server had installed update KB last night. I uninstalled the patch, rebooted and installed sophos again. This time there was no problem. Same here with multiple clients - removing the update in safe mode and restarting solves the issue. Uninstalling the KB resolved our issue however some servers where completely stuck so we had to restore them from backup. We are using Sophos I would recommend that you read up on the KB before installing the fixes and if they affect your system.

Windows 10 machines seem to be unaffected. But all of our Windows 7 machines auto installed this update so we've spent since 8AM this morning going to each machine and removing it having to boot into Safe mode.

We also have the issue, Windows 7 stuck on welcome screen after putting in password. Randomly hanging for minutes and no network access. We also have Sophos. Same issues. Until all 3 were removed, we had users stuck at "welcome" upon login, PC's stuck at "Preparing to configure Windows Going to be a fun couple of days.
